With its long coastline of 8118 kms, 53000 sq kms of continental
shelf area, 2.2 million sq km of Exclusive Economic Zone and 1.2 million
hectares of brackish water bodies, India is endowed with rich fishery

India is the third largest producer of fish in the world
and second largest producer of fresh water fish in the world. Fish production
increased by 4.4 per cent and reached 6.9 million tonnes in 2006-07. Fishing,
aquaculture and allied activities are reported to have provided livelihood
to over 14 million persons in 2005-06, apart from being a major foreign
exchange earner. The fish seed production was 31688.01 million fry during
2006-07.

Further, considerable infrastructure facilities for processing
of marine products have been developed over a period of 50 years. At present,
there are over 369 freezing units with a daily processing capacity of
10266 tons out of which 150 units are approved for export to EU. About
499 units are engaged in production of frozen fish with a total storage
capacity of 134767 MTs. Besides, there are 12 surimi units, 5 canning
units and 471 units that are engaged in pre-processing and dry fish storage.

Exports of marine products from India, during 2006-07, set
an all-time record, both in terms of quantity - 612641 MTs (growth of
19.62%); and of value - Rs. 8363.53 crores, equivalent to US Dollar 1852
million (growth of 15.43% in rupee value and 12.69% in US $ realization).
This is the third consecutive year when the exports have shown an upward
growth in volume and value.
Shrimp continued to be major item of India's exports in
value (55%), followed by frozen fish (17%), Frozen Cuttlefish (9%), Frozen
Squid (7%) and other items. European Union remained India's largest market
with a percentage share of 34% followed by Japan (16.1%), USA (16.03%)
and China (14%).
