Gender is the difference between men and women as perceived by the society.Men are conventionally shown in an active role in a society whereas women are portrayed more as a cosmetic element. Gender-based issues at work place have recently become an important topic of discussions in labour market. One of the most prevalent issue is sex-based discrimination where men are given more preference than women for doing a work. There are also other Gender-based issues which arises at various points in life especially at work place. For example, sexual harassment with women at work place;marginalisation and segmentation of the occupational structure in favour of men, etc.Such issues makes women socially, economically, professionally and politically backward and less advanced.Such issues also highlights the role of women in a social context as well as in professional terms.

These issues need to be addressed to ensure gender equality in the labour market, which require concerted efforts both at academic and policy levels. The idea is to give equal opportunities to women to be professionally well-qualified,get reputed place in an organization, treating them at par with men, giving them equal opportunities to do work and to show their talent.Women should be ensured about their safety at a work place. Thus, for business to be successful, one should not hire or fire a person on the basis of gender.

Sexual harassment at work place is an unwanted sexual conduct in a workplace, the forms of which are diverse and numerous. It is usually defined as discrimination against women which denies them the right to work in a healthy and rewarding atmosphere. It can have cumulative effects on the whole organization. When it becomes very unpleasant for a worker ,she will most often seek alternative employment. The employer ,on his part, incurs significant costs in recruiting and replacing such workers. Therefore it is in the interest of employers that the working environment ensures that workers are treated with dignity.

The important legislations for gender-based issues at work place are:-

  • Equal Remuneration Act of 1976 - under it,there should be payment of equal remuneration (whether in cash or kind) to men and women workers for same or similar nature of work protected under the Act.It also provides that the employers must also not discriminate on the basis of sex in the recruitment of workers for the same or similar work, or in any terms or conditions of employment, such as promotion, training or transfer.

  • The Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946 - it deals with the provisions regarding safeguards against sexual harassment of women workers at their work places.

Thus the employers' of the organisation must focus upon encouraging equality in employment and increasing the participation of women managers and business entreprenuers. They must give equal importance to both men and women. There should be no difference in their pay scale, facilities or amenities provided to them and opportunities given to them, etc.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) also plays very important role in promoting equality between all women and men in the world of work. The primary objective of the ILO is to promote the opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Decent work is the converging focus of the four strategic objectives, namely rights at work ,greater employment and income opportunities, social protection and social dialogue.
